Description
Joseki / Volume 1 lays the fundament of solid joseki understanding by
studying every aspect of the fundamentals in detail. Already
the basic topics are complete: All the kinds and choices of
first
moves (incl. the 5-5 point and moves in the center), empty corners in
the middle game, corner enclosures, approach moves, pincers and
symmetries are explained by general principles, actual game examples
and reference diagrams. Exhaustive but easily applicable
classifications of move types, meanings of stones and development
directions teach the reader what to think about and how. For example,
you will learn to distinguish direct from indirect connection and the
major types and their subtypes of thick shape moves
and of creating possibilities. This very well
structured language and its context knowledge guide us through the
wilderness of the infinite variations possible in corner sequences. The
book is worth reading even for its appendix alone; it teaches territory
evaluation, local move selection and correct placements of extensions
and checking extensions.
This is not your usual Go book. You get much high quality contents
suitable for everybody from 18 kyu to 3 dan. While joseki dictionaries
lose track in the dust of coordinates, this systematic book provides us
with the
overview: Every general concept can be applied to all josekis. One must
not confuse fundamentals with simplicity - their firm understanding is
the key to becoming stronger!

About the Author
The author has played Go since 1991 and is a German amateur 5 dan since
1998. He is also available as a
Go
teacher. On the newsgroup rec.games.go, he has been the top
contributor. He is one of the leading researchers in formalised,
systematic Go theory (example papers:
Ko, Ko and Dame Endgames
under Area Scoring,
Types
of Basic Kos,
External
versus Internal Ko)
and the world's top
Go rules
researcher. Now, starting with the Joseki / Fundamentals book, his
emphasis is shifting to explaining strategy and tactics easily
applicable by all players. As a player, his broad understanding of the
board's center allows him to play very unconventional openings.
