Summary

Since 1985 engineering challenges of naval architecture and ocean engineering are my business. Results of past research and development projects are not the only service my customers can take advantage of. Also new problems which require the development of their own algorithms are always welcome to me.

Specialties

  • Ship Manoeuvring
  • Dynamic Positioning
  • Seakeeping
  • Offshore Pipelaying
  • Submerged Towed Systems
  • System Identification by Regression Analysis
  • Numerical Modelling and Development of Algorithms

Experience

Project Manager at HSVA, the Hamburg Ship Model Basin
April 2002 - today
  • Responsible for the manoeuvring model tests, system identification and numerical simulations to determine the manoeuvring and course keeping behaviour of ship designs. Development and maintenance of the corresponding software. Most frequent purpose: To check if the ship design complies with the IMO standards MSC.137(76) and MSC/Circ.1053, where necessary to make immediate modifications, and to provide results within a few days.
  • Engineering for the shipbuilding and offshore industry and development of the corresponding algorithms, e.g. motion simulation for moored pipelaying vessels in waves, structural analysis of their stingers, dynamic positioning capability plots (DP2, DP3) according to IMCA M 140, analysis of submerged towed systems, trajectory calculation for a drifting object in wind, waves and current.
  • Experience with full-scale manoeuvring sea trials, reading the NMEA 0183 interface and post-processing the data by a system identification algorithm to obtain a numerical model.
  • Contribution to the development of the system Uthlande, a Java GUI for the hydrodynamic algorithms of the German shipbuilding industry. This was a software project with distributed remote partners using Eclipse and sharing their work on a CVS server.
  • Project manager of the R&D projects on manoeuvring.

Project Manager at SVA Potsdam, the Potsdam Ship Model Basin
July 1998 - March 2002 (3 years 9 months)
  • Development of algorithms for the system identification of freely manoeuvring ship models and for manoeuvring simulation. Purpose: to simulate spiral tests and other standard manoeuvres for which a towing tank is too narrow. Validation of these algorithms by outdoor model tests (turning circles, spiral test) on a lake.
  • Responsible for the model tests, system identification and numerical simulations to determine the manoeuvring behaviour of ships. Development and maintenance of the corresponding software.
  • Engineering for the shipbuilding and offshore industry and development of the corresponding algorithms, e.g. hydrodynamic analysis of a self-propelled dredging grab.
  • Development of an algorithm for the time extrapolation of ship motions in irregular waves to predict a favourable moment for helicopter landing.
  • Project manager of the R&D projects on manoeuvring.

Research Engineer at TU Berlin (Berlin University of Technology)
January 1985 - June 1998 (13 years 6 months)
At the department of Prof. Günther F. Clauss:
  • R&D on the structural dynamic analysis of offshore pipelaying in waves, resulting in a software system for this purpose and in a doctorate approved summa cum laude.
  • Contribution to the development of a pipe laying model test facility used to validate the dynamic analysis algorithms.
  • Development of a software system to operate the wave basin and to perform computer-aided seakeeping and offshore model tests. This included modification of the UNIX kernel for real time drivers of A/D-D/A-converters as well as all required DSP algorithms for pre-processing the wave maker driving signal and post-processing the dynamic responses of the floating structures in time and frequency domain.
  • Development of an algorithm to generate linear wave packets (similar to wavelets) with freely definable amplitude spectrum for the determination of RAOs.
  • R&D on submerged towed systems.
  • Planning of research projects.
  • Administrator of the department's computers and self-developed ocean engineering source code.
