Continental Breakfast

Rituals in your kitchen - Rituale am eigenen Herd
Aus der Serie / From the series: Looking Twice
Video-Document
D 1999 / 2000, 13 Min.

The crucial problem in ethnological field studies are the burdening eye- and mind-glasses

you carry with you in your 'expedition cases'. The problem of perspective related to this

cannot even be solved by letting the 'aboriginals' film themselves. The distance

and at the same time necessary intimate empathy have to be created every moment anew.

Like the so called lost paradise actually never was lost for ever, but is beeing lost any moment anew,

when you know better than nature does. Here the camera, my third eye,

looks head over down on me breakfasting. And by this simple means of change,

we perceive the ritual character of the action, in those odd looking movements. A ritual in my own kitchen.

Every item I use but, is not European, not Continental at all, but unintentionally globally accumulated, I forgot.

Continental Breakfast was documented on location Can Ticitoru, Cabo de Barbaria, Isla de Formentera, Baleares,

Spain on Dec. 27th, 2000, 9.16 - 9.27 hours a.m. The ritual was performed by an aboriginal German, age 6o,

with Irish butter, a Spanisch teapot, a Swiss steel knife, Italian glass, a Corean tea bowl,

Dutch cheese, Taiwanese Chopsticks, Nepalese tea, rain water from the Pacific Ocean,

a Cashmere pullover, a metal sieve from the US and a British aluminum pot,

but with native garlic and bread, and was documented with a Japanese camera.
