Queer
Watchlion
Naturally the whole film can be seen from a queer point of view. There are, however, various definition elements for "queer" and our QW has found two scenes, appearing quite close together which border on the not quite acceptable. When Abel's arm is touched during a conversation, this homophobe asks the man if he is gay. And in a tirade of hate against the artists, the cook in a service area in the freeway gives the hypothetical example of a boy who, raped of his father, is now unhappily gay, as if to say, child abuse is in some way pleasurable. Of course, both these characters deliberately reflect bigoted attitudes. Unfortunately these lines are rattled out so casually, that it is not perfectly clear how the film distances itself from these views. As with the example of sexism, this film does not provide answers, and in this respect does not necessarily give the audience food for thought, but rather the unconscious confirmation of their already present (mis)information.
