Newsgroups: alt.religion.scientology Subject: Congressman John Porter on Scientology From: jimdbb@aol.com (JimDBB) Date: 17 Jan 1999 19:19:18 GMT -------- I have been asked to post this letter from Congressman John Porter (republican) of Illinois. I had written congressman Porter about CAN and how CAN was destroyed by the Church of Scientology which used tax-exempt money to harass CAN into bankrupcy. I had thought that the CAN office was in Porter's District but it is in Congressman Philp Crane's District. Even so, Porter graciously granted us a meeting which was attended by myself and two Board members of CAN-Illinois. We found Congressman Porter to be very attentive and interested. He was presented with appropriate information on the Church of Scientology and how it is using tax-exempt money to harass people and organizations around the world. I have wanted to scan Porter's letter as is but for now will copy it out. If anyone would like an actual copy of his letter, email me. D.C. 20515 November 28, 1997 Mr. James Beebe 44 Court of Greenway Northbrook, Il 60062 Dear Mr. Beebe: I appreciate your taking the time to meet with me in my Deerfield district office. It is always good to have an update on the Cult Awareness Network (CAN). I commend your work. Our conversation regarding Scientology was interesting. It is a business and it's tax exemption status should be eliminated. Congressman Crane is a good contact as he is on the Ways and Means Committee and Congressman Henry Hyde Chairs the House Judiciary Committee. Please let me know if I can be of any further support. Thank you again for your visit. I enjoyed meeting with you and hope you will continue to feel free to call on me whenever I can be of assistance. Sincerely, (signature) John Edward Porter Member of Congress
