Newsgroups: alt.support.ex-cult Subject: Help! How to prevent MIT student from joining cult (Scientology)? From: rnewman@ATHENA.MIT.EDU (Ron Newman) Date: 11 May 1995 01:12:43 GMT An undergraduate friend recently told me some very upsetting news: One of his frat brothers has declared his intention to drop out of MIT at the end of this term....to become a full-time staff member of the Church of Scientology's "Sea Organization". My friend would like to find some way to prevent his frat brother from making this very bad decision. I'd like to help, but I'm not sure where to begin. Should we visit the Dean's Office? Make an appointment with his advisor? Talk to the professors who are teaching the classes he's now taking? Call his parents? Hire a group of "deprogrammers" to visit him? If any of you have had *any* experience in trying to keep someone you love out of a religious cult, or getting them out once they get in, please either post here or send me e-mail (rnewman@mit.edu). I'll pass any advice on to my friend. This is an urgent situation, because the term ends in just a couple of weeks, and then the brother will be moving out of the frat, possibly never to return. -- Ron Newman Email: Web: http://www.mit.edu:8001/people/rnewman/home.html (I speak only for myself, not for any part of MIT.)
