Newsgroups: alt.religion.scientology Subject: Letter from Sen. Moseley-Braun From: bholzm1@icarus.cc.uic.edu (Burt N Holzman) Date: 12 Nov 1996 23:12:04 -0600 -------- Response from a letter I sent Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun of Illinois; obviously tthe first letter didn't get through to her. Any suggestions of a tack to take? -B ----- Dear Mr. Holzman: Thank you for your letter regarding the Department of State's formal protest of the German Government's discriminatory actions towards members of the Church of Scientology. Although I personally do not endorse Scientology, I support the right of all people to practice the religion of their choice. I therefore objected to some of the actions taken by the German government toward American members of the Church of Scientology. In reponse to these actions, and in accordance with my strong belief in every individual's inalienable right to freedom of religion, I, along with a number of my Senate colleagues, wrote to Secretary of State Warren Christopher on this matter. Our letter urged Secretary Christopher to raise the issue of religious discrimination toward Scientologists with officials in the German government. In addition to my opposition to religious discrimination, Germany's actions are troubling to me because their actions appear to violate Germany's international obligations under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Helsinki Final Act. Thank you again for contacting me about this issue. Please continue sharing your thoughts on this or any other issue affecting our nation or the state of Illinois. Yours truly, Carol Moseley-Braun United States Senator
