STOP THE HATRED IN GERMANY - DON'T LET HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF

THE TENTACLES OR PROPAGANDA AND HATE

In August 1940, Der Sturmer, Adolf Hitler's favorite newpaper, pictured an octopus, the Star of David on its chest, being skewered by spears lebelled "Truth" and "Enlightenment."

The octopus was often used as a symbol by the Nazis to denigrate members of the Jewish religion.

On October 2, 1992, the Rasant, a journal of the German Employees Union, printed a story vilifying the Church of Scientology. The accompanying illustration exploited the octopus symbol in an attempt to stigmatize the American religion.

The octopus surfaced again as a means to attack Scientology in the Hamburger Morgenpost newspaper and in national television coverage.

Since 1991, there has been a merked increase in acts of hatred and violence against minority religions in Germany - the same path Germany started down six decades ago. Beatings, murder, fire bombings and other acts of violence by German extremists against "foreigners" have become all too common.

The Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, given the task of implementing the Helsinki Accords, summarized the situation in Germany in a report released in September 1993:

"The dramatic and horrifying surge in violence against foreigners in Germany... has posed perhaps the single greatest human dimension challenge for the government since the collapse of the Berlin Wall."

Despite international criticism, the German government has done nothing effective to stem the hatred and violence.

You can help stop the hatred.

The wrong thing to do is stand by and watch history repeat itself.

Write to President Bill Clinton. Urge him to take strong and effective steps to stop hatred and discrimination against religion and ethnic minorities in Germany:
