STOP THE HATRED IN GERMANY - DON'T LET HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF

"They Weren't Human Beings"

"I never felt sympathy when I was beating them myself. They weren't human beings, they were foreigners."

These words could have been said in the Germany of 1936. They could have been directed Jews, Gypsies, Slavs, Poles or any other "unwanteds."

They were not. They were stated by a young neo-Nazi more than a half century later.

Extremist violence in Germany has risen from 375 acts in 1990 to 1,483 a year later to 2,285 in 1992. Additionally, there were 17 deaths that year.

While this violence against foreigners has captured headlines around the world, there is another form of current German intolerance which has not - religious intolerance.

The Church of Scientology, and other religions which originated outside of Germany, have been the targets. "Foreign" religions, as the Germans call them.

The media and various political figures have forwarded or condoned these attacks against religious freedom.

The hatred spread today in Germany has the same effect that it had 50 years ago: it ostracizes unwanted groups and individuals. And it creates fertile ground for "random" acts of hatred and violence and the deprivation of civil liberties.

It must be stopped.

Don't stand by and watch history repeat itself.

Write to President Bill Clinton. Urge him to take strong and effective steps to stop hatred and discrimination against religion and ethnic minorities in Germany:
