PSAMRA, Psycho-Social and Medical Research, aims to promote research
and public debate on (usually controversial) aspects of human
involvement in social and political life. The project was founded in
the early 1980s, partly to provide scientific support for the movement
"Physicians for Social Responsbility" (including IPPNW), partly as an
independent "think tank". Early work addressed the medical effects of
nuclear weapons used in war and the psychology of the cold war,
especially individual perceptions and coping responses. A major study
of children and youth in western Germany was carried out between 1985
and 1992, published widely. More recent work has focussed on mental
trauma, taking the example of racist violence-victims and questioning
the long-term meaning of trauma caused by
political persecution in eastern europe and USSR. (Cooperation with
therapists from several countries) With the proposal "integral studies"
we aim to continue and build on PSAMRA's work, opening to wider
interdisciplinary cooperation. More about PSAMRA's background may be
found in our INTEGRAL STUDIES
presentation.
