Writer’s Guidelines:

1. Manuscripts should focus on a successful teaching idea, lesson, strategy, project, problem, or program for teaching, learning, and enjoying mathematics. While the readers of WI cover a wide range of ages and abilities, we generally publish ideas geared to grades 2 through 8. We prefer hands-on, classroom- tested ideas.

2. Manuscripts should be typed and not more than 900 words in length. Manuscripts submitted on 3.5-inch Macintosh format (Microsoft Word preferred) are welcome and appreciated. If sending a disk, please also send a printout of your article.

3. There are different types of articles that appear in Wonderful Ideas:
Puzzlers: double-sided, problem-solving cards to be passed out directly to students. Featured every month.
Kids’ Corner: monthly brain teaser problems for students to solve. Each month, we include at least six problems and solutions.
Wonderful Materials: occasional feature reviewing worthwhile math materials of many kinds, such as manipulatives, books, or games. In the past, reviews have included Fraction Bars® and NCTM’s Addenda Series.
Make-It Math: occasional feature showcasing a puzzle or activity that requires students to make something. Past Make-It Math articles have included tessellations, Tangrams, and Pentominoes.
Wonderful Ideas: general category for all other activities, games, and lessons.

4. Manuscripts should include the following information: topics involved, appropriate grade levels, materials needed, type of activity, description of the idea, and extensions or variations. If appropriate, include discussion questions, student responses, or samples of student work. Also, include author’s name, address, phone number, current position, and school name.

5. Oftentimes in WI, text is accompanied by a reproducible page featuring worksheets, charts, game boards, problems or other graphics. We encourage you to include graphics with your article. Graphics must be black and white. Photographs are not acceptable. Examples of student work are welcome.

6. We reserve the right to edit and rewrite articles without prior author approval.

7. Payment is rendered upon publication. Rates of pay are modest and vary according to the material sent. Authors receive one copy of the newsletter in which the material is published.

8. Manuscripts are normally evaluated within ten weeks of receipt. If you would like your manuscript returned to you, you must include a SASE.

9. Wonderful Ideas assumes no responsibility for any unsolicited manuscript sent to us.

10. If you have an idea, but dislike writing, we will be happy to talk to you about your idea. If it matches our needs, we will write it up for publication and credit you for the idea. However, no payment is offered.

11. All submissions must be original and not previously published.

12. Samples of previously published articles are available upon request.

WI is always pleased to receive manuscripts and to talk to teachers about their ideas. Please call us with any questions you might have.
