HISPANIC Magazine is a general-interest, English-language, monthly publication with a circulation of 250,000 and readership of 1,000,000. Our scope is national, and our typical reader is a 35- to 49-year-old college-educated Hispanic professional with an average household income of $69,000. Most of our readers are not recent immigrants but were born in or grew up in the U.S. and speak English as their primary language. HISPANIC is BPA-audited. HISPANIC's editorial focus is on business, career, politics, and culture. We look for stories that are timely, provocative, and unique. We confront issues affecting the Hispanic community, but we prefer to emphasize solutions rather than problems. We do not run articles on people, places, or businesses simply because they are Hispanic. We do not publish poetry or fiction. We prepare each issue two months before it is mailed to subscribers (for example, stories for December are assigned in September, and the manuscripts are due October 1).
We prefer a tone that doesn't overexplain the Hispanic perspective (such as not explaining Hispanic symbolism or translating Spanish words to English). Generally, the point of view should be inclusive: "we" rather than "they."
Story Types and Rates
Features range from 2 to 5 magazine pages (1,400 to 3,500 words) in length. Each month we include features covering Career, Business, Issues, Politics, and Special Topics. The average payment for features is $200 for short articles, $450 for longer stories. Short pieces may be published in the "HISPANIC journal" section, which is a gazette in the front of the book containing later-breaking news than the other articles in the magazine. Short pieces are also used in the lifestyle section in the back of the book, called "Portfolio." Portfolio contains product coverage, travel destinations; book, music, and film reviews; and money tips. The average payment for short pieces is $75. All story payments and lengths will be agreed upon in advance with the assigning editor and will be included on the contract.
Submission
Before you submit a query, read back issues of the magazine carefully to familiarize yourself with the topics we have recently covered and to get an idea of our target audience. If we've covered a topic before, we're probably not interested unless there are significant new developments. SUBMIT ALL IDEAS IN WRITING, IN THE FORM OF A QUERY LETTER OR A FULL MANUSCRIPT. Queries are preferred, and are acceptable by mail, fax, or e-mail (our address is editor@hisp.com). Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced, and with one-inch margins. 'The author's full name, address, and phone number(s) should appear on the first page. We can't return unsolicited manuscripts or photos, so please don't send us your only copy.
Acceptance
We will contact you if we want you to develop your query into a story for HISPANIC or if we want to use your manuscript sent on spec. PLEASE NOTE: We operate with a very small editorial staff, so we aren't able to handle telephone queries about story ideas or follow-up calls about queries. Please don't call us. We will call or write you if we are interested in your idea or manuscript. If we decide to use your submitted manuscript, we will issue a contract, which we will send to you for your signature. The contract specifies the rights, resale, length, due date, and payment amount for the story. Please send the accepted story on diskette if possible (in either Macintosh Microsoft Word or PC text only/ASCII format) or by e-mail. ALL FACTS in the article (whether from an interview with a person or a written source) will be checked by our staff. Therefore, if we accept your story, you must provide phone numbers for all people and organizations mentioned and all people used for background information. Also, please provide photocopies of documents containing data used in your story. Include photographs or photo sources if available.
Deadlines
If the story is not in our office by the deadline specified in the contract, the piece may be canceled or moved to a later issue.
Payment
Payment is upon publication, unless otherwise specified. Expenses are reimbursed on a case-by-case basis and must be discussed before work commences on the story. Additional expenses incurred by the author but not discussed with the assigning editor will not be reimbursed. Payments are made to the writer in the month of publication, and the writer receives two copies of the issue with payment. A kill fee for a completed, accepted story will be paid only if the article is not published within six months of the issue date specified by the assigning editor AND if it cannot be rescheduled for a future issue. In that event, we will compensate the writer 25 percent of the total amount specified on the contract.
Rights
HISPANIC buys all rights to articles, unless otherwise specified. Many of our features are placed on the Internet, giving more exposure to our writers.
