Writer's guidelines
HEARTLAND USA is a general-interest, bi-monthly magazine with a guaranteed circulation of over 750,000 and a readership exceeding 3 million. Targeted primarily at blue-collar working men, the publication regularly includes an eclectic mix of short, easy-to-read articles on participatory sports, spectator sports (motorsports, football, basketball and baseball), hunting, fishing, how-to, travel, music (both C&W and soft rock), human interest, and wildlife.
Please keep in mind that
our average reader is a high school graduate who sees himself as hard working,
traditional, rugged, confident, uncompromising and daring. We have
consciously chosen not to "write down" to our readers, but rather to pursue
an editorial voice that reflects a relaxed, jocular, street-smart familiarity,
with just a hint of attitude. The liberal use of anecdote or compelling
quotations -- anything to breathe some life into a piece -- is looked upon
favorably.
The target length for feature
articles is 1,200 words, with payment varying from $250 to $950. Feature-length
pieces just lend themselves to strong photographic support.
Department-length articles
(generally 550 - 1,200 words) pay from $140 to $950.
We pay on final acceptance (i.e. when we're certain the piece will appear in an upcoming issue), offer a 20% kill fee on assigned work, purchase the first or second North American serial rights, and copyright our publication. Hard-copy submissions must be sharp and legible. Simultaneous, photocopied, and reprint submissions are okay. Enclose a SASE with any query or submission. Response will usually be within 4-6 weeks. A free sample copy is available on request. Clips of published work should accompany hard-copy queries. E-mail queries may be sent to the following address: husaedit@aol.com
