Girlfriends Magazine Writers' Guidelines

Girlfriends Magazine is America's fastest-growing lesbian magazine.  Our mission is to provide its readers with intelligent, entertaining, and visually pleasing coverage of culture, politics, and sexuality--all from an informed and critical lesbian perspective.

The sections for which we encourage freelance submissions are:

Parenting: 600 words from a first person perspective.  Anecdotal, controversial, and challenging pieces encouraged.  Tell us what is different about your parenting experiences, your children, or your family structure.  Give us examples.  Must include two or more photos of you and your child(ren)/family.

Travel: 800 words in main text; 180 word sidebar on "best-of" the profiled area.  You must tell us something unique about the area; tell us something no one else could tell us.

Fiction: 1,300 words maximum.  All styles considered.

Humor: 800 words; must have some relevance to lesbian readers.

Sports: 800 words; action oriented profile of a particular athlete, team or group involved in a sport that has some interest among lesbians.  Tell us what is unique about this particular athlete.

Spirituality:   600 words; profile-oriented piece on a religious leader or activist that has some relevance to lesbians.  Profiles of unusual or underrepresented religions also encouraged if they have some particular meaning for lesbians.

Health: 600 words; essay or how-to article on socio-political health issue (is Prozac good?) or on a particular ailment that affects lesbian women (breast cancer; yeast infections).

Authors are encouraged to query the editorial staff via letter or email before they submit unsolicited material.  Please make sure you study the magazine's style and previous articles before you send us unsolicited work.  (Note: some book, video, movie, music & multimedia reviews may also be written on assignment; query with clips of work.)

Fees: Girlfriends magazine pays ten cents per word for all written contributions.

Please keep in mind that we use Chicago Style Manual in considering the editorial clarity of our contributions.  It is strongly encouraged that you read an issue of the magazine before you send material in for consideration.

For editorial submissions, we would like copy to arrive on floppy disc, formatted in Microsoft Word for the Macintosh.  Traditional and express mail are acceptable.  If you have access to a fax or electronic mail, our fax number is 415-648-4705, and our e-mail address is staff@gfriends.com.  Please allow six to eight weeks for a response.  We do not return unsolicited material unless it is accompanied with a self addressed, stamped envelope.
