Articles in Flower and Garden must specifically relate to the topic of home gardening. This includes, but is not limited to, information on enhancing the homeowner's outdoor living areas. All stories must focus primarily on ideas that can be applied to the home garden and outdoor environs. How-to articles are the best way to approach topics, although historical and background articles are considered if a specific adaptation can be obviously related to home gardening. Story ideas that do not fit into the category described will not be automatically eliminated, but it is always best to query first. Flower and Garden is a national magazine with a circulation of more than 650,000 subscribers, so articles must have a broad-based appeal.

Queries should include a statement of the author's purpose, an outline of the proposed article and suggestions for illustrations or photography as well as an indication of the graphics to be provided for consideration. Whenever we deem it necessary, alternate means may be found to illustrate an article if we feel submitted graphics do not adequately illustrate the message conveyed. Flower and Garden is published six times a year and stories are generally scheduled one to two years in advance of publication. Because of the long lead time, you are advised to query before submitting finished manuscripts so we may make suggestions to enhance the chances of your material being accepted. Completed manuscripts should include a short, succinct author bio, suitable for publication. Good quality slides/transparencies increase your chance of acceptance. When applicable, source lists or charts of detailed information make for a better article. We are able to professionally finish any rough drawings you may supply and appreciate seeing some type of graphic with your completed manuscript. Although all submissions are handled with care, safe return of unsolicited materials is not guaranteed. Please include a SASE. Allow us six to eight weeks to report on submissions.

We prefer to receive photographs that accompany a related manuscript rather than unsolicited photos with no text. Black-and-white prints are used occasionally, but for the most part, flowers, gardens and plant look most appealing in color. Photos should be sharp, clear, evenly exposed and of top quality. An accurate packing list must accompany all submissions. Work must be labeled with the photographer's name, including address if possible. Individual slides should be numbered with a corresponding description sheet including Latin botanical and common names. Accurate identification is extremely important. In shots of individual flowers or plants, clearly indicate with end is up on each photo.

Rates of pay varies with use, required editing and quality of material. It is our policy to pay for manuscripts on acceptance and photos separately upon publication.

Pay scale: Featurette (500 words), $200 ($250 for story and one usable color photograph); Feature (1,000 words), $350-$500 (depending on technical nature of the material, required editing and author's credentials). Photo rates (color slides or transparencies preferred): 1/4 page, $100; 1/2 page $150; Full page, $200; Covers, $300-$500 (covers must be submitted as transparencies 2-1/4 or larger. 35mm slides or color prints are not suitable for covers). For complete guidelines, send a SASE. Sample copies are $3.50.
