1998 EDITORIAL GUIDELINES
PURPOSE: Christian Camp & Conference Journal, the bimonthly flagship publication of CCI/USA (Christian Camping International/USA), seeks to inform, inspire, and motivate all who serve in Christian camps and conferences.
FOCUS: Inspirational, in-depth features related to what God is doing in and through Christian camp and conference ministries. Plus, practical "how-to" pieces in the following critical aspects of Christian camping ministries: Outdoor Setting; Purpose and Objectives; Administration and Organization; Camper/Guest Needs; Personnel Development; Programming; Health and Safety; Food Service; Site, Facilities, and Maintenance; Business and Operations; Marketing and Public Relations; and Fund Raising.
FORMAT: In-depth features in the Journal "show (rather than tell)" what God is doing in and through Christian camp and conference ministries. Overall, the Journal displays a balance of first- and third-person articles, profiles, and question and answer interviews.
APPROACH: The Journal is published bimonthly on 8-3/8 by 10-7/8 inch glossy stock with full-color front and back covers. Second and third colors are used intermittently throughout the publication. Article length for features is 3,000 words, "how-to" pieces is 1,000-1,250 words, and sidebars is 250-500 words. Please query first. Response to queries, photos/slides, and manuscripts are sent within one month. The Journal retains first rights.
PAYMENT: The Journal offers 12 cents per published word for articles contributed by individuals outside CCI/USA. Payment is sent upon publication. The Journal offers from $25 to $250 for photographs, depending on quality, position, and size used.
PHOTOS: Profiles on individuals should be accompanied by at least two clear pictures of the subject-one posed, one action. B/W and sharp color shots are acceptable. Mood/action shots covering the gamut of emotion and activity in camp and conference ministries will be considered.
POETRY: This is published quite infrequently, but fresh, free verse will be considered.
MISCELLANEOUS: Current circulation is 7,000; the Journal is distributed primarily to individuals involved in all aspects of Christian camp and conference ministries. Byline and photo credits are given. Submit seasonal material queries six months in advance. Christian camp and conference related jokes and cartoons are welcome.
TIPS: Profiles/interviews and arresting photos/slides are the best bet for newcomers and freelancers. It is crucial to study a sample copy first and then query. For a current issue, send $2.25 plus a 9 x 12 self-addressed envelope with $1.24 postage affixed.
