The Amicus Journal is published quarterly by the Natural Resources Defense Council, a non-profit environmental group. Amicus has a circulation of about 350,000 and is a past recipient of the George Polk Award for Special Interest Publications (a national journalism award) and recognition from Project Censored for a 1992 story on Dan Quayle's Competitiveness Council.

Amicus focuses on environmental policy developments of regional, national and international significance but also includes investigations, profiles, poetry, personal essays, book reviews, opinion pieces, and short news stories. Recent reporting has covered ocean noise pollution and its effects on marine mammals, Chattanooga's efforts toward sustainability, the environmental justice movement, sustainable architecture, environmental action in developing countries, the population problem, and suburban sprawl in the Rockies.

ARTICLES AND BOOK REVIEWS
The Amicus Journal welcomes submissions from free-lance journalists and authors. These should be original, not simultaneous submissions; appropriate for an educated public of diverse backgrounds and training; and may take the form of reporting or book reviews. However, we are unable to consider speeches or fiction, or technical, conference, consumer, or product reports.

Payment is made within thirty days of final acceptance. Articles purchased by The Amicus Journal are acquired with first North American publication rights, plus the nonexclusive right to reprint the article in whole or in part, in print or electronically. All subsequent printings must mention that the article first appeared in The Amicus Journal.

QUERIES
Authors should submit queries of one to two pages prior to preparation of a manuscript. Please do not send full-length manuscripts. Queries should outline:
- focus and length of proposed article - timeliness
- factors that make the story interesting and/or important
- relevance to national and international environmental issues, if any
- plan of the research and writing (sources, sites, etc.)
- time required to complete the story
- availability of photographs by the author (if any)
Please include clips and a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

PHOTOGRAPHS
We prefer submissions of 8x10 glossy, black-and-white prints. However, we will accept slides or contact sheets with negatives, and can convert from color originals if necessary.

All photographs should have neatly typed credits and captions affixed to their backs. Slides also should indicate both credit and a brief identification. Photographers are responsible for securing model releases. Artists' work will be returned upon publication.

POETRY
The Amicus Journal publishes no more than four poems per issue. Poems must be rooted in nature, and should be no more than one manuscript page in length. Please enclose SASE when you send poetry to Brian Swann, Poetry Editor, The Amicus Journal, 40 West 20th Street, New York, NY 10011. Poetry manuscripts will not be returned if SASE is without sufficient postage.

Sample copies of Amicus are available upon request with a self-addressed, 9x12 envelope and $4.00 postage.

NOTE: In answer to a query regarding electronic submissions, I was sent the following:
A brief query via e-mail is all right. However, we prefer submissions to be sent by regular mail if accompanied by clips or if longer than a page or two. If you do decide to query by e-mail, please be sure to cite the publications where your work has appeared.

Sincerely,
Anna Suessbrick
