Writer's guidelines
Above & Beyond is the most widely distributed magazine in the Canadian North. It is the in-flight magazine for First Air, the third-largest airline in Canada, and is also available in all northern communities and to subscribers throughout southern Canada and the world. Above & Beyond is a quarterly magazine published in January, April, July and October.
Facts for Writers
We are interested in feature articles pertaining to:
- political, social and economic activities from a northern perspective.
- outdoor and recreational activities.
- profile pieces on northern individuals, communities and destinations.
- wildlife, fishing and hunting activities.
- travel features.
Above & Beyond magazine articles must be illustrated by vivid full-colour photographs and be relatively short in length. A typical article should be no longer than 1,500 words.
The Personal Approach
Take the personal approach. By this we don't necessarily mean writing in the first person, but rather take your own approach to a place you've visited or an adventure you've had. What was it that really excited or inspired you?
We're looking for stories that paint a picture. Excellent photographs are essential, yes, but don't rely on these to provide your visual images. Your words should do this so that photos and text work harmonize. The reader should come away feeling that he or she has gone on the trip with you - the old armchair traveller. The same ingredients of excitement and personal angle go for social, historic and profile pieces, too. Anything you submit should come from the heart as well as the mind.
Specifics:
Submissions must be in-house and complete at least two months prior to publication unless specific arrangements are made in advance. You must submit photographs with your manuscript. We prefer articles typed triple-spaced on legal-sized paper and on a computer disk indicating program used whenever possible. You may also submit articles by E-mail. SASE required for articles submitted by mail.
Facts for Prospective Photographers
Except for extraordinary instances, photographs appearing in Above & Beyond are provided by the authors with their submissions. We require original colour slides or colour prints. Superb, full-colour photographs are essential to each and every article. We need excellent transparencies (no black & white, please) of the location and people. But as much, or more important, are photos of the local colourful sights and scenery, faces and places, and things to do that give each destination and story its own unique charm. We need "up close and personal" candid shots of local people in action. Add in photos of the local points of interest and be sure to include anything you can on the area's wildlife and flora and fauna.
Photo Caption Information
Provide complete caption information for photographs: Give who, what, when, where, why and try to put it into some glowing prose.
Payment
Writers are paid approximately $200 to $300 per manuscript. We buy first North American rights. Payment is issued about 30 days after publication.
We pay $25 for each photograph published. Our policy is to use only original transparencies or prints, to permit optimum colour reproduction.
Notes from the Editor:
On Spec --- is the modus operandi for Above & Beyond magazine. It is not because I do not appreciate your time and effort. Rather, it is because at times manuscripts do not live up to the query letters, and the colour slides that accompany an article are not a quality I can publish.
Rejection letters - as every writer knows, serve two purposes; besides acting as a normal depressant, they can be used to wallpaper bathrooms. Do not become discouraged by rejection letters - keep writing!
What You Can Expect From Me:
* excellent editing, design and layout of article.
* a byline that is read by approximately 100,000 readers. (Now isn't that enjoyable?)
