Jeckes
(Jeckes – Die entfernten
Verwandten)
1997, 99min
Regie: Jens Meurer, Carsten Hueck
Cast: Gitta Sherover, Dr. Elly Freund, Naomi Fränkel
Two German film makers, born in the 60s, visit four German Jewesses and
three Jews, born between 1909 and 1926, who left the country when Hitler
took power, or helped to build the state of Israel after the Second World
War. They include a former paediatrician, a supporter of the Middle Eastern
Peace Process, the only female major of the Israeli army during the war
of '73, one of the last survivors of the revolt in the Warsaw Ghetto and
the former deputy mayor of Jerusalem, Paul Jacobi, who died in the
summer of '97.

Naive and curious are the most apt descriptions for the German documentary
film makers. Before they started their project they hadn't even considered
the possibility of there being any German-speaking Jews in Israel. That
such a lively and open documentary has come out of this owes much, therefore,
to the seven interviewees. Despite what they are here faced with they still
deliver deep insights and views worth the price of the ticket. The Talking
Heads sequences are done in a very traditional manner, although some tours
of the city are included. Jeckes is a thought-provoking experience
which probably raises more questions than it answers. That may be a good
thing: this may motivate cinema-goers to enquire of people in their own
field of experience.
