Jared's mother, the only sensible character in Blackrock, has just been told that she is suffering from breast cancer. This sub-plot, and how she tells - or doesn't tell - her son, may not have anything to do with the main story, but improves it with its very existence. Of course, nothing else could improve Blackrock.

We also have to contend with homophobia. The relevant quote is, "What are you, a queer dog?" and leads, in the film, to a tattoo. Well...
